Stanhope Labor Government returned
Members of ACT Young Labor helped re-elect the Stanhope Labor
government in the Legislative Assembly, achieving majority government for the first time in the ACT.
At a local level, members were involved in various candidate teams, with
some members working on more than one campaign! Members were involved in
letterboxing, door knocking, writing campaign material, organising
fundraising events and administration.
During the 2004 federal election campaign, members of ACT Young Labor
helped out staffing voting booths, letterboxing and doorknocking; and
supported the ACT Labor candidates: Member for Canberra Annette
Ellis, Member for Fraser Bob McMullan and Senator for the ACT Kate Lundy. Due to the proximity of the marginal
seat of Eden Monaro, Young Labor members were also involved in Candidate
Kel Watt's campaign.
Anyone can get involved in the election campaigns; they can be lots of
fun and a great way to meet other people in the party.
Bush's visit to Canberra President Bush received a "warm" welcome from Young Labor when he visited Canberra on October 23 2003. Young Labor members helped stage the
protest outside Parliament House. The enthusiastic crowd of around 3000 to 4000 heard from Labor MPs Harry Quick, Carmen Lawrence along with other members of parliament. Key speakers included Andrew Wilkie,
the ex-Office of National Assessments analyst who resigned over the dodgy Iraq intelligence. Here are some photos of the event. The famous effigy of Bush being kissed by his faithful dog Howard is visible
in both pictures. |
